Founder - Michael Burns
Biotech environments move quickly and are often shaped by decisions made before the full picture is clear. Luminal Arc is shaped by decades of work across science, operations, and strategy, and by a career spent understanding how these disciplines influence one another in programs that often qualify for accelerated pathways.
Michael’s career spans more than two decades across the scientific, operational, and CMC dimensions of drug development. His work has contributed to five FDA and EMA approvals across multiple modalities in rare disease and has shaped how teams translate scientific ambition into operational reality.
A Career Built in Three Chapters
Foundational
Michael began his career as a bench scientist at TKT, Therion, and Shire. These years built the scientific grounding that still shapes his work today. He developed a deep understanding of modality and process, along with the technical intuition and regulatory literacy that come from hands‑on experimentation and exposure to real development constraints.
Builder
His work expanded into platform architecture and organizational leadership at BioVex, Amgen, and bluebird bio. He built teams, designed processes, and prepared programs for late‑stage development and commercial readiness. These roles required navigating complexity at scale and leading cross‑functional efforts where scientific, operational, and organizational decisions had to move in sync.
Advisory
In later roles at Syenex and Arvada, Michael became a strategic integrator and advisor. He shaped CMC platforms, operationalized new businesses, and helped founders align scientific vision with modality strategy, organizational fit, and ecosystem realities. This work reinforced the importance of bridging scientific depth with operational judgment and clear communication.
This work has always been anchored in a simple idea: therapies with the potential to change patients’ lives deserve the strategic guidance that help them reach the people who need them.
